Holiday fishing on the Sunshine Coast

by Top Catchon 30 December 2013in Blog

Hi all, we have had a lot going on for the past few weeks and the next couple look the same. The weather has been fantastic over this Christmas period which is a welcome change from the last 3 years, and the fishing has been great too. The full day charters have been exceptional catching a variety of species including mahi mahi, wahoo, some really big cod and plenty of fusilier, tusk fish and pearl perch. We have been doing a mixture of bottom dropping and trolling to mix things up and getting great results. Below is a picture of a big 30kg gold spot estuary cod caught on a live bait on the middle section of the banks.

We have had some good days on the ½ and ¾ day charters but they have not been as consistent. The shallower reefs not as productive as out wide at the moment however we’ve still have had some good fishing with tusk fish, squire, moses perch being the bulk of the catch along with some pearl perch, big cod and the odd yellow fin tuna and mahi mahi. We have noticed that in on the close reefs if you can keep away from the majority of boats you’ll catch fish. So hopefully, now that the holiday period is coming to a close, we will get our consistent catches again. Below are some pics the first is a 16kg cod caught on a ¾ day at the Caloundra 12nm. The second is plenty of mahi mahi and wahoo caught trolling the bottom end of the Barwon banks.

The weather for the early new year looks pretty good especially for the mornings and the new moon on Tuesday should have the fish chewing for the next 4 or 5 days. If you would like to come out for a trip head over to our contacts page and give us a shout.  Happy hunting!!!!!!

Fishing Sunshine Coast this week

by Top Catchon 18 December 2013in Blog

The Sunshine Coast seen a pretty good week of weather to get offshore and we did plenty!!! And the good news is the forecast for the Christmas period is fantastic. Friday was another full day and we started off at Caloundra wide targeting the pearl perch which have been on the chew. We got a feed and a couple of cobia just undersize. We then had a troll on the way north – as we had seen some mahi mahi free jumping. We didn’t hook up and after ½ hour we decide to go back to bottom fishing on the barwon banks. We got on to a few snapper, tusk fish, moses perch and gold spot morwong. This photo is of a 3kg snapper caught on the barwon banks.

Saturday and Sunday were ½ and 3/4 day charters on the closer reefs and wrecks and got some more cobia just under. They were all released to fight again another day. We have been seeing a lot of numbers of this species just undersize on most of our reefs, so it looks like there should be plenty to take home in the coming months. We also chased some mackerel on the ½ day Sunday as they have been active in the Caloundra 5mile area. We found some boil-ups but could only manage to hook mack tuna and bonito. Also caught in close were tusk fish, pearl perch, squire and moses perch. This photo is of a 2kg pearl perch measuring 46cm, a good fish for this shallow depth.

So here’s what else was caught over the last week-

Barwon banks- Snapper, tuskfish, fusilier, red throat emperor and mahi mahi

Caloundra wide- pearl perch, tusk fish, squire, moses perch and cobia

Caloundra 9 and 12nm- pearl perch, tusk fish, moses perch and odd spotted mackerel

Currimundi reef- squire, sweetlip and school and spotted mackerel

Gneerings and murphy’s- tusk fish, sweetlip and spotted mackerel

The next high tide for Mooloolaba is at 08:39pm @ 1.30m. With last nights’ full moon the next couple of mornings’ should fish well.

Happy hunting!!!!!!!!!!

Summer is here and right on cue the fish are biting

by Top Catchon 11 December 2013in Blog

Summer is here and right on cue the fish are biting. Over the weekend some huge fish were reeled in and plenty of them which put a smile on everyone’s face. We fished in close on Friday and then out wide on Saturday and Sunday. Best results came from Caloundra wide, on Saturday we caught the bigger fish but Sunday we caught the most fish just missing our bag limit of pearl perch by 2 overall both days were great. So Saturday we fished the 50 – 60m stuff for most of the day and caught squire, tuskfish, moses perch and a massive Samson fish weighing in at 15kg. Towards the end we headed out deeper to 80m and caught a few pearl perch and some nice snapper.
alt

Sunday we started in much the same area catching a few moses perch and squire however the bite in the shallower 50 – 60m didn’t last very long so we found ourselves out deep chasing pearl perch fairly early. We caught a range of sizes and while a few were released being undersize plenty were going into the esky and the biggest weighed in at 2.5kg. Everyone got plenty of the most sought after table fish on the sunshine coast. Well done guys

Looks’ like we should be in for a good summer fishing season. Here’s what else is getting caught lately-

Barwon banks- red throat emperor, fusilier, moses perch, tusk fish, pearl perch, mahi mahi and wahoo

Caloundra wide- tusk fish, snapper, pearl perch, cod and Samson fish

Caloundra 12nm- pearl perch, moses perch and squire

Caloundra 9nm- pearl perch, tusk fish and cobia

The Gneerings- tusk fish, sweetlip, squire, and both school and spotted mackerel

Mackerel schools have been popping up on all our local inshore reefs as well as around the nw fairway buoy off Caloundra. Try casting small metal slugs to the edge of the school and retrieving fast or if that doesn’t work troll a skirted pilchard through the bust ups’. The next tide for Mooloolaba is a low at 9:20am of 0.61m and the weather looks great until Monday arvo.

Happy hunting!!!!!!
